french-gilt-desk-set-with-scissors-letter-opener
French Gilt Desk Set with Scissors & Letter Opener

An unusual antique French desk or correspondence set, measuring approximately 11" long, with a beautifully decorated gilt-metal holder containing two coordinating writing-desk implements: a pair of long scissors and a slender paper knife or letter opener.

The fitted outer case is richly ornamented with raised scrolling decoration, elongated geometric detailing, rounded accents, and a pointed finial at the base. The handles of both implements repeat the decorative gilt finish, allowing the individual pieces to disappear almost completely into the holder when stored.

Rather than a petite sewing accessory, the substantial 11" scale suggests this was intended for use on a writing desk, where scissors and a paper knife would have been kept close at hand for opening correspondence, cutting paper, and other everyday desk tasks.

The long steel blades contrast beautifully with the warm aged gilt metal, which has developed natural patina and darkening throughout. The steel components also show oxidation, surface wear, and discoloration consistent with age and use.

Likely late 19th to early 20th century French, this is as decorative as it is functional—a fantastic object for a library, writing desk, office, or layered into a collection of antique desk accessories.

Dimensions: 11 x 2.75

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0781/0780/3930/files/GreyWhiteMinimalBoldBloggerQ_AInstagramStory-2026-10-06T125259.876.png?v=1791309184
