This round gold pendant depicts Our Lady of Montserrat, known affectionately in Catalonia as La Moreneta (“the Little Dark One”). She appears in profile, crowned and veiled, surrounded by the inscription “NTRA. SRA. DE MONTSERRAT” — short for Nuestra Señora de Montserrat, or Our Lady of Montserrat.
The design is likely Spanish or Catalan, created in the early 20th century for pilgrims traveling to the Abbey of Santa Maria de Montserrat, one of Spain’s most revered Marian sanctuaries perched high in the jagged Montserrat mountains outside Barcelona.
The fine relief and satin finish reflect early Art Deco sensibilities — elegant, clean, and reverent.
Who She Is & What She’s Known For
Our Lady of Montserrat is the patron saint of Catalonia, renowned for her connection to miracles, protection, and faith.
Legend holds that a group of shepherd boys discovered her statue in a mountain cave in 880 AD, glowing with divine light. When villagers tried to move the statue to the nearby town of Manresa, it miraculously became too heavy to lift — a sign that the Virgin wished to remain on the mountain.
A monastery was later built around the site, and the dark wood of her carved figure — weathered by centuries of devotion and candle smoke — gave rise to her beloved nickname La Moreneta. She is known for:
