An unusual antique French bronze semainier, designed as a decorative organizer for the seven days of the week.
The tall architectural form is modeled in a distinctly Neo-Gothic style, with pointed arches, quatrefoil detailing, pierced architectural elements, small finials, and a beautifully structured silhouette reminiscent of Gothic church ornament.
Running vertically down the center are seven individually modeled floral elements, each marked with the initial of a day of the French week:
L — Lundi
M — Mardi
M — Mercredi
J — Jeudi
V — Vendredi
S — Samedi
D — Dimanche
These decorative projections functioned as a weekly organizational system, allowing small notes, correspondence, reminders, or keys to be separated according to the appropriate day. Antique French examples are sometimes described as wall-mounted semainiers or weekly correspondence organizers.
The bronze has developed a beautifully mellowed surface with darker patination settling into the recessed areas, emphasizing the dimensional floral and architectural detailing.
Likely dating to the late 19th century, the piece reflects the strong Gothic Revival influence seen in French decorative arts during the period.
Expect natural surface wear, patina, oxidation, and variation in tone consistent with age.
A particularly unusual piece of antique French desk and household history — beautiful enough to display simply as an architectural wall object, while still retaining the clever weekly organization system for which it was originally designed.
Dimensions: 11.5 x 2.75
