A striking antique French carved wooden heraldic plaque featuring the traditional arms associated with Jeanne d’Arc, Joan of Arc.
Carved in relief within a shield-shaped panel, the composition features an upright sword supporting a royal crown, flanked on either side by two fleurs-de-lis. This distinctive combination is the historic heraldic device associated with Jeanne d’Arc and the ennoblement of her family by Charles VII in 1429. Historic descriptions record the arms as a sword positioned vertically beneath a crown and accompanied by two golden fleurs-de-lis.
Each element carries distinctly French symbolism. The fleurs-de-lis reference the monarchy of France, while the sword and crown are closely tied to Jeanne’s mission during the Hundred Years’ War and her efforts to see Charles VII crowned at Reims.
The plaque has been carved from warm-toned wood with a molded border surrounding the shield. The relief carving retains wonderful depth throughout the crown, fleurs-de-lis and sword, while years of age have given the wood a rich, dark patina and softened surface.
The reverse retains an old metal hanging mount, indicating that it was intended as a decorative wall plaque.
Likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, when Jeanne d’Arc imagery experienced renewed popularity throughout France, particularly in patriotic and religious decorative arts.
Expect age-related surface wear, variation in the wood, scratches, darkening and patina consistent with an antique carved object.
A particularly meaningful piece of French history and symbolism—and a fantastic addition to a gallery wall, library, study, or collection of antique French heraldry.
