These are two original French Revolutionary banknotes called assignats, dated 1792 and 1793 — literally from the first and second years of the French Republic. They were issued against property confiscated during the Revolution, and the government actually printed on them that counterfeiters could be punished by death and informants would be rewarded. Examples of both exact denominations are held by the Musée Carnavalet in Paris. So these aren’t decorative reproductions of Revolutionary imagery — they represent the actual paper currency system used while France was dismantling the monarchy and creating the Republic.”
“These were worth framing because they’re not just antique banknotes — they’re actual surviving pieces of the French Revolution. They were issued in 1792 and 1793, during the birth of the French Republic, and they reflect the government’s attempt to fund the country using property seized during the Revolution. Even the anti-counterfeiting language is extreme: counterfeiters could be punished by death. Framed together, they preserve two tiny but very tangible pieces of one of the most dramatic political and financial periods in French history.
