A beautifully constructed antique French wooden box featuring warm mahogany-toned veneers accented by contrasting burled wood inlay and fine linear stringing. The faceted corners give the case an almost architectural silhouette, with decorative inlaid panels continuing around the front, sides, and lid.
The top is finished with a substantial geometric brass carrying handle, giving the piece the character of a small traveling or personal effects box. A brass-edged keyhole punctuates the front, while the hinged lid opens to reveal a wonderfully aged interior with remnants of its original olive-green textile lining. The underside of the lid retains additional fabric upholstery and small brass fittings.
The combination of refined marquetry, brass hardware, and practical carrying handle suggests this may originally have served as a traveling dressing box, document box, or gentleman’s personal effects box, rather than a simple decorative casket. Without its original fitted interior, we would keep the exact intended use broad.
Today, it would be beautiful used as a jewelry box, keepsake box, desktop storage, or simply displayed as an objet on a coffee table or chest. Surface wear, scratches, variation to the veneers, interior wear, and other signs of age are present and contribute to its antique character.
