Late 19th Century | Graphite on Paper | Original Gilt Frame
A quietly compelling 19th-century French maritime sketch, featuring a study of small sailing vessels rendered in fine graphite. Likely the hand of a coastal school artist or marine painter, this page captures various ship silhouettes in motion — from full-sailed brigs to narrow fishing boats — arranged as quick compositional impressions.
Each figure is drawn with light, assured strokes, hinting at the preparatory work behind larger seascape paintings. The delicate pencil technique and the way the boats seem to drift across the page evoke the balance between observation and artistry typical of late 19th-century marine draftsmen.
Housed under glass in its original gilt and red bole frame, now beautifully timeworn with soft craquelure and patina that speaks to its century-old life.
