A beautiful antique French grain sack with a warm natural flax ground, heavy textured weave, and bold black woven stripe detail running through the center. This piece has that wonderful rustic hand associated with old French utility textiles — thick, slubby, imperfect, and full of character. Based on the visible weave, weight, and texture, this appears to be a hemp linen or heavy linen-hemp blend, the type of durable fabric traditionally used in France for storing grain, flour, market goods, or household provisions.
Measuring 20” x 53”, this is a wonderfully usable long-format textile. It can be styled folded over a bench, draped across a table, layered at the end of a bed, placed over a basket, used beneath serveware, or repurposed into pillows or upholstery. The black stripe gives it a more neutral, slightly moodier feel than classic red-stripe versions, while the original tie detail and stitched edges add to its authentic utilitarian charm.
Good antique condition with expected age-related wear. Scattered marks, discoloration, fiber slubs, fold lines, woven irregularities, softened edges, and surface variation are present throughout.
