A beautiful antique French torchon with classic red woven stripes and a soft natural oatmeal ground. The textile has a lovely weight and texture, with a subtle herringbone-style weave and raised woven bands throughout. Based on the slubby texture and hand feel visible in the photos, this appears to be a linen or linen-hemp blend, possibly métis, which is a traditional French household fabric often made from a linen/cotton blend.
Torchons like this were everyday working linens in French homes, used as kitchen towels, drying cloths, bread cloths, or general household textiles. Today, they are just as beautiful styled folded in a kitchen, layered over a basket, used under bread or cheese service, draped over a sink, or incorporated into a collected tabletop moment. The red stripe gives it that classic French utility look — simple, honest, and so good
Good antique condition with expected age-related wear. There are scattered small marks, speckling, fiber irregularities, faint discoloration, fold lines, and natural slubs throughout the weave. These are consistent with age, use, and the nature of antique household linen. Presents beautifully and has wonderful texture.

All Maetiques items are considered final sale and sold in, "as-is" condition. Our items are extremely old and have had a prior life, which leads to imperfections. We will always point out major flaws, but due to the nature of our items, returns or exchanges are not accepted.
