An original antique French engraving titled “Journée du 17 Juillet, 1791”, referencing the historic events of July 17, 1791 during the French Revolution (the Champ de Mars Massacre). The scene depicts a mounted military figure before a formation of soldiers, with the original French inscription visible beneath the image.
The lower text reads:
“journée du 17 juillet, 1791,
songer qu’il faudra du courage
pour tuer ces gens là”
Roughly translated: “Day of July 17, 1791 — consider that it will take courage to kill those people.” The tone reflects the charged political climate of Revolutionary France and makes this piece both visually striking and historically significant.
The engraving is beautifully presented in a classic gilt frame with layered matting that complements the tonal depth of the print. The patina of the paper, slight toning, and original linework all speak to its age and authenticity.
