A richly detailed 19th-century French still life oil painting on canvas, signed Marthe Bouvier and dated 1888. This intimate composition captures the everyday poetry of domestic life—stacked books with worn red bindings, a glass cup delicately balanced above them, a green wine bottle, a paper-wrapped package, playing cards scattered across the table, and a tobacco pipe set beside a brass dish with matches.
The muted background and warm earth tones heighten the sense of depth, while the precise brushwork on small objects like the matches and pipe suggest an academic training typical of the late 19th century. Still lifes of this period often carried subtle symbolic weight—here, themes of leisure, intellect, and fleeting pleasures are suggested through the objects chosen.
