Antique French Still Life with Wine & Strawberries

A beautifully moody French still-life painting, likely late 19th to early 20th century, depicting a glass of red wine beside a plate of strawberries and fruit. The artist worked in a warm, restrained palette of russet, ochre, deep red and muted green, giving the piece that wonderfully aged quality that works so well among antique interiors.

The painting is signed at the lower left, although the signature is difficult to decipher with certainty. It remains housed in its substantial period-style gilt frame, which is arguably as special as the painting itself. The frame is built in multiple decorative layers with floral, foliate and scrolling ornament, beaded detailing and an aged gold surface that has softened beautifully over time.

Close inspection shows the age of the piece throughout—from the surface texture and wear of the painting to the cracking, losses and old repairs visible on the gilded composition ornament. Rather than reading as pristine, it has the kind of authentic patina that makes an antique painting feel genuinely old and collected.

A wonderful piece for a kitchen, dining room, butler's pantry or layered gallery wall, particularly for someone drawn to traditional French still lifes and highly decorative antique frames.
