Antique French White Chrysanthemum Still Life

A wonderfully moody antique floral still life depicting a loose arrangement of white chrysanthemums against a deep, nearly black background. The darker ground makes the flowers feel especially dimensional, with loose painterly brushwork in creamy whites, soft gray, green and touches of ochre throughout the petals and foliage.

The painting appears to be executed on an old artist board, which gives the surface a wonderful aged quality and helps place the work firmly within an earlier decorative tradition. It remains housed in its simple period gilt frame, with a warm aged finish that complements the darker painting beautifully.

This is the kind of floral that works almost anywhere—layered into a gallery wall, tucked onto a shelf, or hung alone in a bedroom, hallway or sitting room. The restrained palette makes it particularly easy to mix with other antique paintings.

Condition / Disclaimers

Antique condition consistent with age and use. Painting is executed on an old board and shows expected age-related surface variation, minor marks and wear. The gilt frame has visible chips, abrasions, losses, scratches and worn areas throughout, particularly along the corners and edges.

Rub ’n Buff has been applied to several chipped areas of the frame to soften the appearance of exposed losses. This is a cosmetic touch-up and should not be mistaken for original gilding or professional restoration. Some of the original frame wear remains intentionally visible.

Frame joints, edges and gilded surface show irregularities associated with age. Please review all photographs closely, as they are considered part of the condition description.
