A finely crafted antique sterling silver (MARKED) match striker, also known as a pyrogène, featuring a rounded form with horizontal reeding and a fitted silver lid pierced to hold matches upright. The interior retains its original striker surface, designed for lighting wooden matches in daily use.
The piece is clearly hallmarked with a lion passant, anchor, and date letter “Z”, confirming English sterling silver, along with a partially legible maker’s mark reading “J _ _ S.” These marks place the piece firmly within traditional British silversmithing, likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. In the Birmingham assay cycles, the lowercase “z” corresponds to 1899–1900 (late Victorian period)
Substantial in hand with a beautiful, honest patina, this pyrogène reflects a time when even the smallest household objects were thoughtfully designed and impeccably made. Today, it remains both functional and decorative—equally suited for use or display on a desk, bar cart, or mantel.

All Maetiques items are considered final sale and sold in, "as-is" condition. Our items are extremely old and have had a prior life, which leads to imperfections. We will always point out major flaws, but due to the nature of our items, returns or exchanges are not accepted.
