Pair of French Louis XV Style Upholstered Armchairs

A beautiful matching pair of French Louis XV style armchairs, each with an elegantly carved wood frame, shaped silhouette, upholstered sides, and generous proportions. The warm-toned wood paired with the saturated blue upholstery gives these chairs a very classic French look while still making them incredibly usable in a modern interior.

Each chair measures approximately 29"W x 29"D x 35.5"H.

The frames are beautifully shaped throughout, beginning with a gently arched and carved crest rail centered by a floral motif. The carving continues subtly along the upper frame and front apron, giving the chairs just enough decorative detail without becoming overly ornate. The exposed wood has a warm honeyed finish with natural variation and age throughout.

The backs are fully upholstered within the carved wood frame and have a softly shaped upper edge that follows the movement of the crest rail. The upholstered armrests curve downward into beautifully shaped exposed supports, while the upholstered side panels continue the fabric treatment along the interior and exterior sides of the chair. Decorative nailhead trim outlines the upholstery and adds another layer of traditional detail.

The front rail has a curved, serpentine shape with carved floral ornamentation at the center and additional carving at the knees. The chairs stand on cabriole-style legs with scrolling feet, giving them the graceful, light appearance associated with Louis XV seating.

The blue upholstery has a small-scale woven texture that gives the fabric depth without feeling busy. The loose seat cushions are generously sized and sit over a fully upholstered deck. The cushions give the chairs a softer, more relaxed profile than a tightly upholstered seat and make them particularly comfortable as lounge or occasional chairs.

From the reverse, the craftsmanship of the frames is equally apparent. The curved back rails, continuous upholstery, and exposed wood all follow the same shaped construction seen from the front. The undersides retain traditional upholstery covering and tacking, consistent with an older upholstered chair construction.

Stylistically, these are best described as French Louis XV style fauteuils, likely dating to the early to mid-20th century, approximately circa 1920–1950. The form draws heavily from 18th-century French seating, particularly in the cabriole legs, serpentine rails, floral carving, shaped backs, and open upholstered arms, but the overall construction and upholstery treatment suggest later revival pieces rather than 18th-century originals.

Condition

These chairs are in very good antique/vintage condition with no major condition issues to note. The wood frames show expected minor surface wear, small marks, and finish variation consistent with age and use. The upholstery presents well overall, with only normal light wear expected of an older upholstered piece. The frames appear sturdy, and both chairs retain a cohesive, matching appearance.

As with all vintage upholstered furniture, minor variations in fabric tone, cushion shape, finish, and surface wear should be expected and are part of the character of the pair.
