This antique French fitted casket was thoughtfully constructed for use on a tabletop or desk, with an interior layout that strongly suggests tobacco or gentleman’s utility storage.
The elongated oval form opens to reveal a richly lined interior featuring two perforated side compartments—designed to hold small cylindrical items upright—flanking a central lidded compartment with a brass pull. This configuration is consistent with historic tobacco caskets used to store cigars, cigarettes, loose tobacco, or related tools, keeping each element neatly separated and accessible.
The interior is lined in deep red velvet, offering both protection and visual contrast against the warm, dark wood. The lid interior is framed with fine brass inlay, and the exterior is finished with subtle brass edging, giving the piece weight and presence without excess ornamentation.
A small paper inventory label and hand-carved markings remain on the underside, offering a quiet nod to the piece’s past life and use. The exterior shows honest age and wear consistent with an antique utility object that was used, handled, and kept close at hand.

All Maetiques items are considered final sale and sold in, "as-is" condition. Our items are extremely old and have had a prior life, which leads to imperfections. We will always point out major flaws, but due to the nature of our items, returns or exchanges are not accepted.
