A moody, textured oil painting on canvas depicting a quiet industrial canal under winter skies. The scene unfolds in a muted palette of charcoal, slate, and olive, punctuated by hints of ochre and rust—conveying the stark rhythm of barges, weatherworn rooftops, and the stillness of water at rest. Impasto brushwork adds movement and tension to the otherwise silent setting, creating a deeply atmospheric composition with echoes of a European port city.
Signed in red at lower right, possibly “Armand Apel” or “Arel”—the stylization makes full attribution unclear. While the artist remains unidentified, the work shows strong technical ability and compositional confidence.
The reverse reveals a well-aged original canvas with historical patching and hand-marked inventory numbers, as well as faint traces of old gallery or collection records. The piece is housed in a carved and gilded wood frame that shows its age with minor chipping and wear but still complements the painting’s tone beautifully.

All Maetiques items are considered final sale and sold in, "as-is" condition. Our items are extremely old and have had a prior life, which leads to imperfections. We will always point out major flaws, but due to the nature of our items, returns or exchanges are not accepted.
