A beautifully substantial antique French commode crafted in the Louis XV tradition, dating approximately to the mid / late 19th century. Exceptionally heavy and solid, the piece is constructed primarily of oak with traditional joinery and the wonderfully substantial proportions associated with older French case furniture.
The façade has tremendous movement, with three wide serpentine-front drawers following the undulating shape of the case. Each drawer is framed with raised molded detailing and fitted with decorative brass pulls and escutcheons. The shaped apron continues the movement of the drawer fronts and is centered by a hand-carved shell motif, while additional carved floral, foliate and shell ornament travels down the front stiles.
The solid oak top follows the shaped profile of the case and has a softly molded edge. Its broad surface displays pronounced oak grain, natural tonal variation and the subtle irregularities expected from old solid timber. The pale, washed/bleached finish settles beautifully into the carving and grain, leaving darker remnants and patination within the recessed areas that emphasize the depth of the workmanship.
The interior construction is equally noteworthy. The generously scaled drawers retain traditional hand-cut dovetail joinery, with thick solid-wood drawer sides and bottoms. Secondary woods were used within the drawers, as was customary in French cabinetmaking. The rear of the commode is constructed from individual solid timber boards secured within a substantial framework rather than modern sheet material—another indication of traditional furniture construction.
This is not a delicate decorative chest. It is an extremely heavy, solid and finely constructed piece, with the scale and physical presence to anchor a room. Beautiful beneath an oversized mirror or artwork, it would be equally functional as bedroom storage, a dining room commode, an entry piece or a substantial console-style chest.
This piece presents beautifully and retains the character expected of an antique of this age. Please note that it shows evidence of age, prior use and natural movement of the solid timber throughout.
Most notably, age-related separation is present within portions of the drawer bottoms and drawer construction, clearly photographed. This is consistent with shrinkage and seasonal movement of old solid wood and has been intentionally documented in the listing photographs.
Additional condition characteristics visible in the photographs include natural checking and minor splits to the wood; old surface marks, abrasions, small nicks and areas of discoloration; variations and wear within the bleached finish; minor losses and softened edges to portions of the hand-carved decoration; old holes and construction marks; irregularities and age-related movement between adjoining pieces of timber; and expected wear and oxidation to the brass hardware.
Overall, this is an exceptionally heavy, solid antique with beautiful old-world construction and finely carved details. Age-related wear and separation are present as photographed, but no major condition concerns are apparent.
Our pieces are thoughtfully sourced and offered as-is in antique or vintage condition. Time, use, and history naturally leave their mark, and we believe those details are part of the beauty. While we make every effort to highlight notable imperfections, subtle variations should be expected.
