A beautiful framed French etching by V. J. Roux-Champion, depicting a quiet countryside scene with a large tree, small house, cart, and open landscape beyond. The work has a wonderful layered quality, with dense etched linework through the tree canopy and softer atmospheric detail in the surrounding fields and sky.
Roux-Champion is a lovely name to know for collectors of French works on paper. A painter, draftsman, watercolorist, engraver, ceramicist, and illustrator, he was active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is represented in museum collections today. His work carries the kind of quiet, observational quality that makes French etchings so special — humble architecture, rural landscape, and a real sense of place.
The piece is housed in a simple gilt frame with wide matting, giving it a collected, gallery-like feel while still feeling warm and understated. A lovely piece for a hallway, study, bedroom, or layered wall of French works on paper.
Condition: Good vintage condition with age-related toning to the paper and mat, light foxing/discoloration, and wear to the gilt frame including small marks, rubbing, and finish loss. Framed as found behind glass.
