A striking antique French aneroid barometer housed in a richly detailed circular ebonized wood frame. The dark surround is decorated with raised foliate motifs, small rounded studs, and molded concentric borders, giving the piece a wonderfully sculptural presence on the wall.
The cream-colored dial is printed in French with traditional weather indications including “Tempête,” “Grande Pluie,” “Pluie ou Vent,” “Variable,” “Beau Temps,” “Beau Fixe,” and “Très-Sec,” surrounding a finely graduated pressure scale. At the center, the exposed brass mechanism is visible through the dial opening, allowing the coiled aneroid capsule and internal workings to become part of the decorative appeal.
A brass hanging ring at the top allows the barometer to be displayed easily, while the reverse retains its circular metal movement plate and adjustment points. The back is marked “132.”
Likely dating to the late 19th to very early 20th century, this is a beautiful example of a scientific instrument made decorative enough for the home. It would be especially handsome incorporated into a gallery wall, study, library, office, or layered among antique artwork.
As with all antique scientific instruments, we recommend purchasing primarily for decorative use unless professionally tested and calibrated. Surface wear, oxidation to the metal, discoloration to the dial, small losses and wear to the wood finish, and other signs of age are present and consistent with its history.
