French Bronze Counter Bell
French Bronze Counter Bell

A wonderfully decorative antique French counter or service bell crafted in warm-toned bronze/brass with an ornate architectural base. The bell is activated by pressing the domed button at the top, which engages the internal striker beneath the bell.
The base is the standout feature: a stepped, pyramidal form decorated with scrolling relief work and a prominent lion mask, all resting on four expressive paw-form feet. Additional pierced and foliate details continue around the lower edges, giving the piece a distinctly historic, almost hôtel particulier or grand reception-desk character.
Likely used as a hotel, shop, office, or household service bell, pieces like this were both practical objects and decorative desk accessories. Today it would be beautiful styled on a desk, entry table, bar, library shelf, or collected alongside other antique brass and bronze objects.
The metal retains a rich, aged patina with areas of oxidation, darker surface variation, wear, and verdigris beneath the base consistent with age and use. The underside reveals the original mechanical construction and internal bell mechanism.
