A wonderfully graphic vintage French ceramic pyrogène, once used on café and bistro tables to hold and strike matches. The upper well held loose matches, while the finely ribbed, unglazed surface around the neck provided the abrasive area needed to ignite them.

The warm cream-glazed base is painted with the words “Quinquina Dubonnet,” advertising the celebrated French wine-based apéritif. Quinquina refers to an aromatized wine made with cinchona bark and quinine. Dubonnet was created in Paris in 1846 and later became one of France’s most recognizable apéritif brands.

The interior bears a circular maker’s mark reading “Pyrogène Paris.” The French word pyrogène translates roughly to fire-maker and is the traditional name given to these match holders and strikers. They were commonly found in French cafés, bars and restaurants before disposable lighters became widespread.

A charming remnant of old French café culture, equally lovely styled beside a candle, on a bar cart or simply displayed as a small piece of vintage advertising pottery.
