A particularly charming 19th-century French landscape, dated 1873, depicting a small architectural ruin or stone structure tucked into a wooded hillside beneath a softly painted sky. The artist worked in a muted palette of sage, olive, blue-gray and warm earth tones, with loose, atmospheric brushwork that gives the little scene far more presence than its scale might suggest.
The reverse is especially interesting. The wooden panel carries a handwritten inscription reading approximately “Châteaubaury 1873” followed by “No. 11e Charlemagne” or similar wording. Because the handwriting is difficult to decipher completely, we are retaining the inscription as found rather than assigning an artist or exact location without further documentation. The back also retains an old Paris artists’ materials / color merchant label, another wonderful piece of provenance tying the work to 19th-century France.
The painting remains in a handsome, substantial dark oak frame with a narrow gilt liner. The combination feels very period-correct: understated dark wood surrounding a small flash of gold, allowing the landscape itself to remain the focus.
What makes this piece especially appealing is that it is not simply “antique style”—the dated inscription places it directly in the 1870s, giving it more than 150 years of history. It is exactly the sort of small, deeply aged landscape that layers beautifully into a gallery wall or sits effortlessly on a shelf among larger pieces.
Condition / Disclaimers
Antique condition consistent with its 1873 date. The painting shows age-related surface wear, minor marks, discoloration and expected irregularities to the painted surface. The wooden frame has visible scratches, scuffs, small abrasions and areas of finish wear, including more noticeable scratching along one side.
The reverse retains its original/older wooden construction, handwritten inscription and old paper merchant label, all showing appropriate age and wear. The handwritten inscription is partially legible and has not been independently authenticated or fully deciphered; wording is described based on what can presently be read from the reverse.
No attribution to an artist is being made. All wear, patina and surface irregularities are considered part of the age and history of the piece and are shown in the photographs.
