A charming collection of four antique French wax seal impressions, individually mounted within gilt surrounds and displayed against a soft pale blue textile ground. Each impression is slightly different in shape and imagery, preserving the wonderfully imperfect character of seals once created by hand.
The collection is housed within a round black frame accented by an inner gilt liner with delicate engraved detailing. The reverse is backed with an old French printed book page—a beautiful detail in itself and one that adds another layer of age and character to the piece.
Wax seals were historically used to authenticate correspondence, documents, and personal communications, with individual designs often representing initials, family devices, figures, symbols, or coats of arms. Rather than a single impression, this piece preserves four separate examples together as a decorative collection.
Likely dating to the 19th century, the wax shows expected irregularities, surface wear, small cracks and losses consistent with age. The backing and frame also show appropriate antique wear. These imperfections are part of the piece's history and are visible in the photographs.
A particularly lovely little object for a gallery wall, library, desk area, or layered among antique artwork—small in scale, but full of detail when viewed closely.
