A beautiful antique French convex mirror set within a warm giltwood circular frame. The deeply curved glass creates the characteristic sweeping, panoramic reflection associated with convex mirrors, transforming an otherwise simple wall mirror into a sculptural decorative object.
The frame is particularly handsome, with a broad rounded gilt molding surrounded by a continuous raised beaded border. Additional concentric moldings surround the glass, creating depth without making the piece overly ornate. The restrained neoclassical detailing allows it to work beautifully alongside both highly decorative antiques and more understated interiors.
Convex mirrors became especially popular in European interiors because the curved glass reflects a wider field of view than a traditional flat mirror. Today they are especially beautiful incorporated into a gallery wall, hung above a small chest or console, or layered among paintings and other collected objects.
The gilded surface retains wonderful age and variation throughout, including darker areas within the moldings, rubbing, small marks, and softened portions of the finish. The convex glass also shows the subtle imperfections and surface variation expected of an older mirror.
A wonderfully classic French piece with just enough ornamentation to feel special while remaining extremely easy to style.
