Early 19th century, likely circa 1810–1830.
A beautiful pair of early 19th century Creil earthenware serving dishes with black transfer-printed decoration and a Paris patent-style maker’s mark. Each piece features a finely detailed scenic border with pastoral architecture, trees, bridges, ruins, and countryside vignettes, surrounding a central neoclassical-style medallion motif.
Creil was one of the important French earthenware manufacturers of the early 19th century, known for producing refined transfer-printed faïence and creamware-style pieces during a period when French makers were experimenting with and perfecting printed ceramic decoration. The mark referencing “impression sur faïence / porcelaine” and “brevet d’invention” points to this early transfer-printing tradition, when engraved designs were applied to ceramic surfaces rather than painted entirely by hand.
The creamy ground, fine black linework, and classical scenic patterning give these pieces a beautiful French Empire / Restoration-era feeling. They are lovely as functional serving pieces, layered into a dining room, or displayed on open shelving or a plate wall.
