An original early 20th-century French ink drawing attributed to Henry Sené (1889–1961), depicting a group of horses and mounted figures rendered with quick, confident linework.
The composition has the immediacy of an artist’s working study: several horses overlap across the foreground while a rider emerges above them, all built through loose contour lines, hatching, and abbreviated marks rather than highly finished detail. The result feels spontaneous and observational, with the artist concentrating on movement, anatomy, and the mass of the animals.
At the lower right, the sheet bears the oval “HENRY ATELIER SENE” stamp, identifying it with Sené’s studio. Other works by the artist are known with this same atelier cachet, including drawings and studies that have circulated through the French art market.
The drawing is housed behind glass in a simple wood frame with a narrow gilt inner border. The paper has developed an overall warm tone with age, along with minor surface variation consistent with an older work on paper.
About the artist:
Henry Sené (1889–1961) was a French painter and draftsman who studied under Fernand Cormon, one of the important academic teachers of the period. Sené worked across painting and drawing, including landscapes, figures, animal studies, and travel subjects. His works are documented in museum collections including Amiens, Dijon, Honfleur, and Montevideo, and surviving pieces from his studio often bear the Atelier Henry Sené stamp seen on this drawing. His work continues to appear on the French art and antiques market, including atelier studies and larger finished compositions.
