An extraordinary, monumental French oak storage cabinet with an incredible combination of architectural presence and useful storage. This is the kind of piece that immediately commands a room: nearly eight feet tall, exceptionally heavy, beautifully proportioned, and constructed in two separate sections, with the upper cabinet resting directly on the lower chest.

The piece is crafted predominantly in oak, with a wonderfully pale, timeworn finish that allows the grain, age, old tool marks, small imperfections, and construction details to remain visible. Its form draws heavily from traditional French provincial cabinetry, particularly the softened curves and shaped paneling associated with Louis XV-era design traditions. Rather than being overly ornate, the decoration comes from the architecture itself: paneled sides, molded drawer fronts, rounded corner posts, a dramatically shaped cornice, paneled cabinet doors, shaped feet, and an unusually large number of drawers.

The lower section is built as a substantial four-drawer chest. Each drawer spans approximately 45" wide x 22.5" deep, providing an enormous amount of concealed storage. The drawer fronts are framed with shaped molded decoration and centered by circular carved details surrounding the escutcheons. Each drawer is fitted with two traditional metal bail pulls. The size and depth of these drawers make the cabinet surprisingly functional for linens, clothing, serving pieces, collections, or virtually anything requiring substantial storage.

Above the lower chest sits the remarkable upper cabinet. The center features a pair of tall paneled doors beneath a sweeping, arched cornice. The doors follow the curved silhouette of the cabinet itself, creating the beautiful serpentine movement that gives the piece so much character. When opened, they reveal a generous central storage compartment with an interior depth of approximately 17.5" and shelving measuring approximately 15.5" deep x 28" wide. The interior retains a much darker aged wood surface than the exterior, beautifully illustrating the piece's history.

Perhaps the most unusual detail is the ten individual small drawers flanking the center cabinet — five on each side. Each measures approximately 19.5" deep x 7.5" wide. These narrow, deep drawers offer an extraordinary amount of organized storage and are one of the features that makes this cabinet so visually distinctive. Their fronts repeat the shaped panel motif found throughout the cabinet, with individual escutcheons and key hardware creating almost an apothecary-like rhythm on either side of the central doors.

Throughout the piece are traditional metal fittings, including decorative escutcheons, keys, bail pulls, hinges, and older hardware. Some pieces of the key/escutcheon jewelry are mixed and matched, something we expect to see on a cabinet that has lived and been maintained for generations. Most notably, one of the escutcheons on the left bank of small drawers differs from the others. We have intentionally left these inconsistencies rather than attempting to make an old piece appear newly manufactured.

The cabinet also shows beautiful evidence of traditional construction. The interior back is composed of individual vertical boards rather than a modern sheet material, with natural movement and separation between boards visible in places. The shelving, back boards, drawer boxes, door construction, molding, hinges, and joinery all carry the irregularities associated with an old, hand-built piece of furniture. The darker interior surfaces contrast dramatically with the bleached exterior and are a wonderful reminder that this was a functional piece long before it became a decorative statement.

The side elevations are just as considered as the front, with recessed panels extending along both the upper and lower sections. Rounded architectural corner elements soften the transition from the front to the sides. The cabinet terminates on substantial shaped feet, including rounded front feet that echo the curves used elsewhere throughout the piece.

Construction & Installation

This cabinet is constructed in two major pieces. The entire upper cabinet lifts away from the lower chest for transportation. There is no permanent attachment between the two sections; the upper section is designed to sit directly on top of the lower cabinet. This is consistent with the construction of many large, heavy European two-part case pieces and also makes moving the cabinet considerably more manageable.

Please note, however, that both sections are extremely heavy. This is not a piece we would recommend attempting to move casually or with only one or two people. Professional furniture movers are strongly recommended and, in our opinion, required. Once installed, we highly recommend anchoring this piece in place.

Overall dimensions: approximately
60.5" W x 27.25" D x 91.5" H

Large lower drawers: approximately
45" W x 22.5" D

Small upper drawers: approximately
7.5" W x 19.5" D

Center cabinet interior: approximately
17.5" total interior depth

Center shelves: approximately
28" W x 15.5" D

Because of its nearly 92-inch height, we strongly recommend measuring ceiling height, doorways, stairwells, elevators, turns, and the intended installation location prior to purchase.

Condition & Important Antique Disclaimers

This piece is OLD and should be purchased with the understanding that it is an antique piece of furniture rather than a newly manufactured cabinet. It carries substantial evidence of its age and history, including variations in color and finish, old marks, minor scratches, small losses, age-related cracks and separations, historic holes, unevenness, oxidation and variation to the hardware, old repairs, wood movement, and general wear throughout.

Professional repairs have been made in France over the course of the cabinet's life. Some repairs are visible upon close inspection and are part of the history of the piece. We consider this completely appropriate for cabinetry of this age and scale and have photographed many of these areas in detail so that its condition can be clearly understood before purchase. Structurally, this piece is SOUND.

The most important functional condition note is that the cabinet naturally wants to sit slightly backward rather than perfectly upright. We have added a small furniture pad beneath the rear foot/feet to level the cabinet and allow it to sit straight. With the pad in place, it presents properly, and sturdy, as shown in our photographs. This should remain beneath the piece after installation or, if preferred, be replaced with an appropriate furniture leveler/shim depending upon the flooring in its new home. Floors themselves are rarely perfectly level, particularly in older homes, so final leveling may need to be adjusted after delivery.

The back boards of the upper cabinet show natural spacing and movement between individual boards, including visible gaps in places. These are old solid wood boards that have expanded and contracted over many years; they should not be expected to resemble the sealed back of a modern cabinet.

The interior has expected wear from use and retains its darker, aged finish. Shelves and interior boards show stains, discoloration, scratches, old marks, and irregularities associated with age.

Hardware is antique and/or older replacement hardware and should be treated gently. Escutcheons and key jewelry are not perfectly matching throughout the cabinet. As noted above, one escutcheon within the left-hand stack of small drawers is visibly different from those surrounding it. Other subtle variations may also be present. Keys and locks on antique furniture should always be considered decorative unless specifically stated otherwise; old locking mechanisms can be temperamental and should never be forced.

Drawer fit and movement may vary from drawer to drawer. Antique drawers are not expected to operate like modern soft-close cabinetry and can change slightly with humidity and seasonal wood movement. Each drawer has been hand cut, and on the back of the drawer is noted with which drawer goes where.

There are irregularities, repairs, seams, slight gaps, uneven edges, finish variations, losses, and areas of historic wear throughout. These are not concealed defects — they are inherent to the age and construction of the cabinet and are visible in the detailed photographs provided.

The overall visual impact of this piece is exceptional. Its scale alone is impressive, but what truly distinguishes it is the architecture: the sweeping top, banks of tiny drawers, enormous lower drawers, paneled central cupboard, old hardware, pale oak surface, and extraordinarily generous storage. It feels less like a simple cabinet and more like a piece of built-in French architecture that happens to be movable.

For a dining room, it could function beautifully as a linen, china, glassware, and serving-piece cabinet. In a bedroom, the lower drawers offer extraordinary clothing storage while the upper shelves and small drawers could organize accessories, jewelry, linens, or collections. In a living room, library, or entry, it could hold books, entertaining pieces, games, paperwork, or virtually anything you would rather keep concealed.

It is a substantial, imperfect, beautifully aged French cabinet that has survived generations of use — repairs, mismatched hardware, wood movement and all — and that history is very much part of what makes it special.

Our pieces are thoughtfully sourced and offered as-is in antique or vintage condition. Time, use, and history naturally leave their mark, and we believe those details are part of the beauty. While we make every effort to highlight notable imperfections, subtle variations should be expected.
