Louis XVI Bleached Oak Commode

A substantial French Louis XVI–style commode dating to the late 19th to early 20th century, showcasing the restrained proportions and functional elegance that defined French furniture of this period. Designed for everyday use rather than excessive ornamentation, this form emphasizes balance, durability, and quiet architectural presence.

Constructed in a light-toned hardwood consistent with oak or a similar regional wood commonly used in French furniture of the era, the piece displays a wide, open grain and softened surface developed through decades of use. Oak was frequently favored for its strength, availability, and ability to age beautifully, and the warm patina seen here reflects both material choice and history.

The commode features clean, rectilinear lines with softly shaped corners and a stepped top that adds visual weight without heaviness. The drawer configuration includes a shallow top drawer above three larger drawers, offering generous and practical storage. The drawers are traditionally constructed and remain structurally sound, opening and closing smoothly.

Decorative brass escutcheons and key plates accent the drawer fronts; these brass elements are later replacements but complement the piece well and maintain a cohesive appearance.
