An exceptional Louis XVI period semainier (weekly chest of drawers), crafted in rich mahogany with finely cast brass mounts and banding. The tall, elegant form offers seven drawers — one for each day of the week — all framed with gilt-bronze trim and fitted with original locks and escutcheons. The top is finished with a pierced brass gallery, a refined detail typical of the late 18th century. Fluted pilasters with gilt-bronze collars anchor the corners, while the chest rests on turned tapering legs capped with bronze sabots.
This is a true period piece, not a later reproduction, showcasing superb dovetail joinery and age-appropriate patina.
Condition:
Overall excellent for its age. One back leg has undergone a stable old repair (pictured). The lock on the fourth drawer occasionally sticks but remains functional. Minor surface wear consistent with age and use.
Provenance & Significance:
Semainiers became popular in the late 18th century, a reflection of the era’s demand for organization and refinement. Pieces of this quality were often found in the private chambers of the French elite.
