Oak Provincial Louis XV Commode 18th Century
Oak Provincial Louis XV Commode 18th Century
This darling piece is OLD. From the handmade dovetailing, to the wooden pegs, from the design. She has all of the signs of a late 18th century Provincial French commode - giving it more rustic charm than your usual Parisian pieces. The slight cabriole legs, and the gently curved apron are hallmarks of Louis XV period, along with the brass hardware. This commode likely comes from a rural region of France that followed the design trends of Louis XV, but simplified the design to suit local taste and materials. Elegant yet unpretentious. Provincial craftsmen often used oak instead of walnut or more exotic woods, as oak was in abundance and sturdy. And unlike those Parisian pieces, this commode has more of a restrained design, which is typical of a provincial (or countryside) furniture made in Fance in the 18th century.
As expected with age, this piece has aging. The top (pictured) has a slight crack. But otherwise, this piece is in great condition in consideration of its age. It is SOLID and extremely heavy, even when the drawers are pulled out. This is a study and solid piece that will age even more beautifully than it already has.
