A beautifully moody early 20th-century still life, signed J. Roth and dated 1932, depicting a tabletop arrangement of apples, a dark pitcher and a casually draped red-and-white cloth.
The composition has that wonderfully grounded, domestic quality typical of interwar European still lifes—simple everyday objects elevated through color, light and texture. The warm reds of the apples and cloth stand out against the deep olive-brown background, while the darker pitcher adds depth and balance to the scene.
The painting is especially appealing for its visible brushwork and softened, timeworn surface. The original wooden frame has a narrow gilt inner edge that adds just enough formality without taking away from the rustic quality of the work.
Signed and dated at lower right “J. Roth, 1932.”
Condition: Antique condition with visible age-related surface wear and areas of paint loss, including losses within the painted surface as photographed. Additional minor abrasions, marks and wear are present throughout. These condition issues are reflected in the pricing and contribute to the piece’s aged character.
