An original figural study by French Symbolist artist Armand Point (1860–1932), bearing collection stamps associated with the artist’s collection.
The composition is densely populated with loosely rendered figures, drapery, and atmospheric forms. Along the lower left and right, groups of intertwined and reclining figures emerge through heavy graphite shading, while the center of the composition opens dramatically into a lighter, almost celestial space. A small grouping of upright figures appears within this central passage, surrounded by additional forms that seem to dissolve into clouds, foliage, or an imagined spiritual landscape.
The exact subject has not been identified, though the arrangement strongly suggests an allegorical or visionary scene rather than a literal narrative. The contrast between the crowded earthly figures below and the luminous central opening may evoke themes of ascension, judgment, revelation, or passage from the material to the spiritual world — subjects entirely at home within the mystical language of late-19th-century French Symbolism.
Point was closely associated with the Symbolist movement and the Salon de la Rose + Croix, and his work frequently drew upon mythology, spirituality, medieval imagery, and the Italian Renaissance. The fluid, densely layered draftsmanship of this work gives it the feeling of a preparatory study for a larger, more fully resolved composition.
