A wonderfully charming antique French artist’s study featuring a collection of ducks and geese rendered in graphite on paper. Rather than a single finished composition, the sheet captures the artist working through numerous poses and gestures—birds standing, swimming, resting, preening and viewed from different angles.
The unfinished quality is what makes the piece especially compelling. Some birds are carefully modeled with darker pencil work and feather detail, while others remain only faint outlines, giving an intimate look into the artist’s process. These types of studies were traditionally created as observational exercises and reference drawings, allowing an artist to understand an animal’s movement, anatomy and character before incorporating it into a larger finished work.
The paper has developed a beautiful warm tone with subtle foxing and age throughout, complementing the simplicity of the original wooden frame.
A particularly lovely piece for a kitchen, breakfast room, study or gallery wall—and an easy way to bring original antique artwork into a space without feeling overly formal.
Condition: Antique condition with toning, foxing, light staining and surface variation to the paper consistent with age. Several sketches are intentionally faint or unfinished. Frame shows light age-related wear.
Dating: Likely late 19th to early 20th century.
