An early 19th century French Provincial oak commode, hand-built in the French countryside circa 1800–1830.

Unlike the refined Parisian pieces of the same period, provincial furniture was constructed by local artisans using regional oak — often harvested nearby — and built for durability, daily use, and generational longevity. This piece reflects that tradition beautifully.

Crafted entirely from solid oak, the commode features a substantial framed plank top with mitered border construction — a hallmark of rural French cabinetry. The wood grain is pronounced and honest, with visible age marks, peg joinery, and hand-planed surfaces that speak to pre-industrial craftsmanship.

The façade showcases three carved drawer fronts framed in raised panels, each adorned with escutcheons and brass pulls. The carving is restrained and symmetrical — characteristic of early 19th century provincial interpretation of earlier Louis XV and Louis XVI influences. The lower apron carries a gentle serpentine curve, softening the silhouette while maintaining a grounded, substantial presence.

Open the drawers and you’ll find hand-cut dovetail joinery — a reminder that this piece predates factory production. These were built slowly, intentionally, and meant to outlive their makers.

This is not a polished urban antique. This is countryside France. Built for stone farmhouses, thick plaster walls, and daily life. It carries that weight and warmth.

Beautiful as a standalone statement or styled as a pair flanking a fireplace or anchoring a bedroom.

Dimensions (each): 46.25 l x 23 w x 32.25 h

Condition & Disclaimers:

Condition grade: Good Condition (age-related imperfections)

  • This commode shows signs of historic insect activity along one interior side structural member — a common characteristic in early provincial oak furniture. The activity is old and inactive. The small, affected area presents as softened wood along the grain and will be professionally hardened, stabilized, and treated by our restorer prior to shipment to ensure structural integrity.
  • One foot has been professionally restored.
  • Minor movement is present in the vertical drawer façade panel when drawers are opened and will also be reinforced prior to shipment.
  • Hand-cut dovetailing shows minor age-related wear consistent with early 19th century construction.
  • Overall, structurally sound and ready for continued generational use.
  • All noted structural details will be addressed by our in-house restorer before leaving our studio, cosmetic separations will remain. This is a true antique piece with stories to tell. This kind of wear is often proof of authenticity in provincial oak. Reproduction oak does not look like this.

Structurally sound and ready for continued use.
