A beautifully atmospheric French pastel depicting a woman seated quietly on a green park bench, viewed from behind in a pale blue and lavender dress. Her elaborately arranged hair and softly bowed posture give the work an intimate, almost private quality, while the deep green background allows the delicate lavender and blue tones to stand out.
The work is signed at the lower right, appearing to read:
“R. Germain
Neuilly-s-Marne
1916”
“Neuilly-s-Marne” is an abbreviated form of Neuilly-sur-Marne, a commune east of Paris. The artist’s surname appears to be Germain, though the first initial is somewhat stylized and cannot be confirmed with absolute certainty.
Presented beneath glass in its older giltwood frame with a wide cream mat and narrow gold inner border. The frame retains visible age, rubbing, small losses, and wear throughout, all consistent with its antique character. The pastel itself has a soft, timeworn surface with scattered age-related marks visible beneath the glass.
